Apprenticeship Course (Racing Option)

This is the first step to becoming a Racing Groom. Find out how an Apprenticeship can kick start your career in racing.

Anyone under the age of 19 who wants to work full time in a licensed racehorse trainer’s yard as a Racing Groom must complete the Level 2 Diploma in Work Based Racehorse Care Apprenticeship. You’ll learn a host of skills specifically related to the care of racehorses and how to ride them.

You will need to like working outdoors, have a reasonable level of fitness and be hardworking. If you’re aged between 16 and 25 and you’re an EU citizen, the training is free.

The Apprenticeship course is available through three training providers; National Horseracing College, British Racing School and Haddon Training.

The course will include:

  • An initial residential Foundation Course lasting either 4, 9 or 14 weeks depending on your level of experience
  • Completing the Level 1 Diploma in Work Based Racehorse Care
  • A work placement in a racing yard
  • Key skills development

If you complete your studies successfully, you’re guaranteed a placement in a yard as a Trainee Racing Groom to work through your apprenticeship.

The apprenticeship usually takes between 12-18 months to achieve. During this time, you’ll be judged on a series of assessments made at the yard you’re working in by a Roving Assessor.
