Travelling Head Groom

“I’m lucky enough to go to Dubai for the winter, so I’m never cold anymore”

Christopher Ely – Travelling Head Groom

If I’m off to the races I’ll travel with the horses to the racecourse and make sure they are all okay. After the racing is finished I’ll come home, wash my horsebox out and make sure all the horses are well and returned to their stables. If I don’t go racing, I’ll be on the yard for 6:30am and ride four lots out during the day before going back for evening stables and getting my stuff ready for the following day.

I was always small at school and when I saw an Apprenticeship listed in the local paper one day, I thought I’d give it a go. When I started to struggle with my weight, this was just a natural progression for me as I wanted to continue to work in racing, and I haven’t looked back since.

Having winners is by far the best part of my job, but also getting to meet new people and travel the world is also great. I’m lucky enough to go to Dubai for the winter, so I’m never cold anymore!

When I take a horse abroad I’m responsible for everything. The feeding, riding, grooming, basically anything that ensures the horse is well looked after for the duration of the trip.

It’s a great life and there are a lot of different things to do in horseracing that you can quite easily get into. It’s not just about being a jockey, so be sure to give everything a go.
