“It was during a work placement at Goodwood that I realised just what an exciting and expanding industry it is”
Nick Swannell – Operations Manager
No one day is the same in this job. A ‘typical’ day can involve anything from working through emails to coordinating site maintenance or liaising with the catering team to helping with the cashing-up procedures.
Race day preparation and delivery is an important part of my role as I have to organise all the raceday staff. I’m also responsible for organising conferences and events, which includes plenty of invoicing and dealing with any specific event requirements.
It was during a work placement at Goodwood Racecourse whilst I was at university that I realised just what an exciting and expanding industry it was, and also how many different factors were behind its success. After producing a dissertation on racecourses throughout the country, I successfully gained a place on the Graduate Programme in 2015 and I haven’t looked back since.
The build-up to a race day and then being involved in delivering it successfully ahead of budget is definitely the most satisfying part of my job. As I’m part of such a small team here at Huntingdon, everyone gets involved in all areas of the business, which is great.
You have to work hard to get where you want to be and you have to be willing to help people who you meet along the way, as you never know where you might see them again in the future. You’ll find that a lot of people you meet in the industry tend to pop-up again somewhere else down the line.
