“Race days are definitely the best part of my job as every room is open and all of our facilities are in use”
Daniel Cooper – Event Manager
I oversee the operation of events held at Epsom Downs racecourse where we host banquets, conferences, exhibitions and racedays throughout the year. The Investec Derby Festival is our biggest event and it takes a small team months to plan in advance, with so much going on behind the scenes in preparation.
I was always very interested in local events around my town growing up, including food festivals and music concerts, and very much enjoyed the whole aspect of planning, organising and managing.
My school work experience was spent at Sandown Park where I got the bug for working at a racecourse. I then chose to study event management at the University of Greenwich where I even got the chance to work at London 2012.
In 2014 I was lucky enough to be selected for the British Horseracing Graduate Development Programme, which placed me at Epsom Downs Racecourse – where I have stayed ever since.
Race days are definitely the best part of my job as every room is open and all of our facilities are in use. The racing is also brilliant fun and it is always special when the top horses run at the course.
My advice would be to follow your passion and start off by volunteering at events that you are interested in. Also, try and make contact with industry leaders and people you admire, shadow them for a day or so, and ask lots of questions.
