  • Apprenticeship Course (Racing Option)

    Location – British Racing School in Newmarket

    Dates – 26th August 2019  – 28th October  2019 

    This pre-apprenticeship foundation course is fully residential and all tuition and learning materials are completely FREE.  The length of the course will depend on your experience and will be either 9 or 14 weeks long.  During this time we will learn:

    Racehorses

    • To ride racehorses in control and according to instructions, you will ride 2 lots every day
    • To muck out and administer daily grooming, feeding and care for racehorses.  You will have 2 or 3 horses to care for during your residential course
    • To prepare a horse for going racing

    Studies

    • Help you to achieve your functional skills English and Maths
    • Help you to achieve your Apprenticeship which includes your Level 2 Diploma in Racehorse Care
    • Help you to achieve your First Aid Certificate

    Life Skills

    • Team building
    • How to budget and manage your finances living away from home
    • Diet and nutrition to help you maintain your weight and a healthy diet
    • Personal safety
    • Drug and alcohol awareness
    • Personal health including sexual education
    • Equality & diversity in the workplace
    • Cybersafety
    • Road Safety

    Following successful completion of this course, you will then be placed into a full time, fully paid job where you will complete your Apprenticeship.  This typically takes 18 months.  A workplace Instructors will visit you in the yard when you are working to help you complete your portfolio.

  • Certificate of Higher Education in Thoroughbred Stud Operations*

    * Subject to final validation approval.

    This new course at Writtle University  College aims to combine a sound knowledge of breeding theory with a range of assessed practical competencies to ensure that the graduate will be a sought-after employee within the thoroughbred stud industry. The one-year Certificate of Higher Education in Thoroughbred Stud Operations award will provide a tailored course to appeal to those students interested in developing their knowledge across a range of disciplines pertinent to breeding thoroughbred racehorses. This theoretical knowledge is combined with extensive practical experience and the development of an appropriate work ethic.

  • Assistant Trainer

    10th to 12th September 2019 at the British Racing School in Newmarket.

    The Assistant Trainers Course is a residential course run over three days. The aim of this course is to illustrate the importance of an assistant trainers’ role both in the yard and on the racecourse.   This course is suitable for Head Grooms as well as Assistants.  A recommendation from the trainer or a CV proving sufficient experience must accompany an application.

    • Handicapping
    • Media Training
    • Health and Safety
    • Racing Welfare
    • BHA’s Licensing and Security functions
    • Weatherbys Operations and the Rules

  • Jockey Training

    Conditional Licence and Category B Course

    The Conditional Licence and Amateur Category B courses are combined. The course is open to any rider wishing to take out a category B permit subject to the existing pre-qualifying conditions and for potential conditional jockeys.

    2nd to 6th December at The British Racing School

    Applications from both Category B Amateurs and Conditional Jockeys should be made to the British Horseracing Authority Licensing Department on 020 7152 0148.

    Racing Secretaries Course
    Location: Northern Racing College, Doncaster

    The Racing Secretaries Course is designed to provide aspiring secretaries and newly appointed secretaries with a comprehensive understanding of the role of the trainers secretary, the structure of the racing industry and racing administration.
