From journalism to bookmaking, there are placements on offer in a broad range of areas. Descriptions of the various placements on offer in 2012 are:
Racing Enterprises Ltd
An exciting placement with the body responsible for the 'Racing for Change' initiative, concentrating on commercial promotion.
Tattersalls
This is a placement for someone with an interest in thoroughbred pedigrees and sales. Based in Newmarket, it typically provides an opportunity to work in one of the world's greatest auction companies over a period leading up to one of their premier autumn sales. Projects include sales book preparation and research.
British Horseracing Authority
The British Horseracing Authority is the governing and regulatory body of British racing. There are usually a number of placements in different departments, offering a range of challenges and projects. Good communications skills, together with an adaptable attitude are required to optimise this Central London based placement.
Huntingdon Racecourse
This placement will include working in the Sales and Marketing Department and will give a general overview of everything that goes on at a racecourse.
The National Stud & Newmarket Racecourse
This is a joint placement between the National Stud and Newmarket Racecourse. The Stud can offer a range of exciting placement opportunities, as it is uniquely placed to offer a commercial or practical placement, or a combination of the two. Many previous graduates have chosen to apply for the full-time Diploma course at the Stud after finishing their placement. All have gone on to thriving posts either in, or related to the Stud industry.
The Horseracing Betting Levy Board and a Racecourse
This placement enables you to work at the Levy Board in London for two weeks gaining experience in several departments, and six weeks gaining broad racecourse experience based at York Racecourse.
The Racecourse Association
The RCA is the trade association for British racecourses. This placement, based at their head office in Ascot, will allow you to get some invaluable administrative experience covering a vast range of activities relevant to the management of racecourses. You’ll normally get the chance to do a research and/or analysis project, too.
The Racing Post
Based in the heart of Canary Wharf at The Racing Post’s modern offices, this placement offers the chance to write for racing’s famous daily newspaper. To gain entry, you’ll need a flexible attitude, an interest in journalism and a good knowledge of horseracing.
Timeform
Timeform is an internationally renowned organisation. Timeform ratings are now widely accepted as the definitive measure of racing merit, and its many publications have become indispensable to thousands of serious punters. Based in its Halifax office in West Yorkshire, this placement will be designed to suit your interests and skills, which must include a good knowledge of horseracing. Your role could be in editorial, marketing or general operations.
Weatherbys
A placement at Weatherbys (based in Wellingborough) enables you to experience first hand the variety of business activities undertaken by this 230 year old private company. Combining tradition, values and integrity with innovation and excellence, its companies - Weatherbys Ltd and Weatherbys Bank Ltd, provide the racing industry with everything from racing administration to banking and financial services in addition to an array of commercial activities. The placement will be tailored to suit the successful applicant.
Goodwood Racecourse (3 month placement starting in June)
Based at the racecourse in West Sussex, this placement offers a good all round exposure to the running of a racecourse including working in the Sales and Marketing Department. This will be a 3 month placement starting in June. You will go back to Newmarket to participate in the 2 week residential course.
Warwick Racecourse
This placement will include working in the Sales and Marketing Department and will give a general overview of everything that goes on at a racecourse.
Newton Abbot Racecourse
This placement will include all the workings of a National Hunt course and a general overview of everything that goes on at a racecourse.
Racing Welfare
This placement can be tailored to an individuals career preference. It can cover areas such as Fundraising and Communications as well as the Welfare side of the company including visiting all of their regional offices.
Sandown Park Racecourse
This placement will include working in sales and marketing and a general overview of everything that goes on at a racecourse that stages both flat and national hunt racing.
Blue Square
This placement, based at their offices in Paddington, London, will include working in the public relations and sponsorship department and is ideal for anyone interested in public relations, sponsorship and marketing.
