My name is Rachael Gowland and I started working for The National Stud in July 2007 as Stud Secretary.
I obtained a Masters Degree in Geography at the University of Edinburgh. I then worked as a Racing Secretary at Mark Johnston Racing and for Amanda Perrett.
I completed the Diploma Course at the National Stud in 2007 before coming their Stud Secretary.
My role is pretty varied. The main part of my role is in-putting data on a daily basis including vet work, farrier lists etc.
I spend a lot of time communicating with mare owners and co-ordinating all the paperwork for mares being covered in the season including booking mares in for coverings.
My qualifications include:
This is quite a difficult job to get into. I would consider doing work experience or finding an internship like the one we run at the National Stud.
Attending the Stud Secretaries’ Course is also a good way of gaining a better understanding of the role and will give anyone new to the role a head start.
