Careers in Racing

Conditional Licence Course (Jump)

Most Jockeys have worked as a Stable Hand at some point in their life and may have completed their Level 2 Diploma (formerly NVQ 2) in Work Based Racehorse Care via one of the routes detailed on this website. They’ve attained their position by showing superior riding skills and enormous levels of dedication and commitment.

The first stage in becoming a Jump Jockey is to be employed full time by a Trainer.  You will need to attend a mandatory course at either the British Racing School or Northern Racing College.

The aim of this five day training course is to build on your skills as a rider.  You will be assessed to ensure you'll be able to ride racehorses safely in public.  Riding out daily, you'll receive coaching on jumping and riding at speed,  This will be accompanied by lessons on the rules and conditions of a licence and jockey conduct.

"I found Tim Reeds’ Schooling and riding tuition the most informative part of the course, along with Julie Brown JIMs and the "Rules of Racing".  I really enjoyed the schooling and I believe my riding has improved because of tuition given on this.  The accommodation was really good really welcoming, nice rooms, good service and food.  I feel I have benefitted from taking part in this course."

Applications for this course are by the Trainer to the Licensing Department of the British Horseracing Authority and you can find out more on the British Racing School website or the Northern Racing College website.
