Apprentice Licence Course (Flat)

Most Jockeys have worked as a Stable Hand at some point in their life and may have completed their Level 2 Diploma in Work Based Racehorse Care (formerly NVQ 2) via one of the routes detailed on this website. They’ve attained their position by showing superior riding skills and enormous levels of dedication and commitment.

The first stage in becoming a Flat Jockey is to be employed full time by a Trainer.  You will then to attend this mandatory course at either the British Racing School or Northern Racing College.

The aim of this five day training course is to build on your skills as a rider.  You will be assessed to ensure you'll be able to ride racehorses safely in public.  Riding out daily, you'll receive coaching on stalls work and riding at speed.  This will be accompanied by lessons on the rules and conditions of a licence and jockey conduct.

"I found everything on the course to be informative and I enjoyed everything, but in particular the riding out and the fitness and being taught by Mr Bleasdale.   My riding has improved because of this course and I have learnt a lot over the 5-days."

Applications for this course are made by the Trainer to the Licencing Department of the British Horseracing Authority and you can find out more about the course and when they are held by visiting the British Racing School or Northern Racing College websites.
